What does small-batch cooking mean?
-
Small-batch cooking is when items are made in small batches versus mass production. This is important because it means there may be small differences between each order. I cook by feel, smell and taste and experience meaning there may be small differences between batches

Are meals fresh or frozen?
-
Meals are all made with the freshest ingredients I can find, and I try to avoid frozen products as much as possible

How do the portion sizes work?
-
Now that is tough question! I will dig into this more with a blog post eventually, but here are my thoughts now. The portions sizes are listed on each item by the size of container. But, servings sizes for other people is a hard thing for me to judge, as everyone does this a little different. My suggestion is, go for the bigger size, but don't over do it. I make deliveries twice a week, so there is no need to try to guess for the whole week. If you have more than you need from your first order, make the second order of the week a little smaller. All items should last at least a week with proper storage (cut strawberries and tomatoes are the exception and should be eaten sooner), and left overs can be used for lunches or a meal the following day

What is the difference between VEGAN and vegan optional items?
-
As nothing on my menu contains meat, all items are at minimum vegetarian (contain no animal flesh). There are also many items on the menu are naturally vegan (contain no animal products). For some items, I prefer to cook with butter, but can substitute for olive oil for those who are eating a vegan or animal product free food

Will your food options change?
-
As time goes on, new items and/or flavours of current items will be added to the list. Unless I encounter unexpected circumstances, I will keep all the current items available

Where do I find ingredient lists and nutrition information?
-
Ingredient lists are listed on this website with each item. As for nutrient labels, I believed these labels can be misleading when it comes to healthy eating and therefor are not included. If you have specific needs for nutrition information, please email at hello@lovetruthandfood.ca or use the form below
Meals at Home
How do I prepare the meals I receive?
-
Some meals are ready to eat. All preparation instructions are available online under “Cooking Instructions”

What kind of ingredients or cooking tools will I need to have at home?
-
Other than an oven or microwave, and a spatula or spoon to stir items, tongs and oven mitts, you should not need anything to prepare your meals. For some of the oven dishes, I will put them on a cookie sheet for stability and ease, but this is not mandatory. You can also spread out the items for the oven if you need them to cook faster. For ingredients, we suggest your favourite salad dressing, and maybe salt and pepper to taste
Packaging
The packaging says compostable, is that true?
-
All packaging, except the tin dishes are compostable in a commercial compost facility. The tin containers are recyclable

Are your containers oven, freezer and microwave safe?
-
Compostable containers are best to be used only in the fridge. The soup containers can be frozen
-
Aluminum containers are freezer and oven safe, but DO NOT put in the microwave
-
Glass containers are oven, freezer and microwave safe, but DO NOT put a frozen glass dish in a pre-heated oven, as it could crack. Instead, put the frozen dish in the oven and then pre-heat it.
Other FAQs
What are microgreens and sprouts?
-
Microgreens and sprouts are immature plants of our favourite herbs, vegetables and seeds. They have been said to have incredible nutrients as well as can be easier digested by our systems. Microgreens and sprouts are grown from seeds, which means they have husks, that, because they are baby plants are not always completely pushed off. All microgreens and sprouts are throughly rinsed, often multiple times, however sometimes these husks stay connected, but they wont hurt you
-
Most microgreens are meant to be eaten raw or warmed only by adding them at the end of cooking hot food (such as soup or pasta). The exceptions are pea shoots, sunflower shoots and lentil sprouts. Both these shoots can take a light heat, during the cooking process and lentil sprouts can be cooked
-
All microgreens and sprouts are harvested, rinsed and packed with a paper towel to avoid decay. Please be sure to always check your microgreens and sprouts for signs that they have spoiled. Microgreens and sprouts are labelled with the date they were harvested, and will always be delivered within a week of harvest. Sprouts are said to last 2 weeks when stored properly, although I have had then last much longer

Is food prepared in local companies regulated?
-
Alberta Health Services has regulations in place that restrict and provide guidance on food preparation. According to the current regulations, certain products (baking for example) can be prepared in a home kitchen, while most other items must be prepared in a commercial kitchen. I am careful to follow all AHS regulations. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at hello@lovetruthandfood.ca or use the form below
